Electric bikes are a great alternative for a pollution-free transportation system. With an aim to give impetus to electric bikes, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has come with many lucrative offers for private e-bike operators.

Following are some of the incentives offered by the BMC:

  • Free parking will be allocated with designated slots for e-bikes.
  • They can benefit from advertisements. 
  • Operators will have to develop a mobile application where the check-in and check-out can be recorded. 
  • The routes and the fares can be decided by the operators. 

The policy is all set to get a final nod from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's general body and then the project can be started on a pilot basis. The BMC further aims to have over 1 lakh e-bikes in the coming years but will now start its fleet by 5000-10,000 bikes.

The BMC officials have stated that the commuters will require insurance for the same and the specification of the model will be provided by the authorities. Notably, in July, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) launched the facility of e-bikes in Kopar Khairane, Belapur, Nerul and Airoli. It had got 35 e-bikes and kept it at several above locations.  

As there had been an increase in the number stunts being performed by teenagers on an e-bike, the officials had ruled out that kids below the age of 18 will not be allowed to use the same. However, the
