Despite rising COVID-19 cases and the threat of a second wave hitting Maharashtra a massive crowd was witnessed at Dadar Market in Mumbai on Tuesday morning, March 16.

The people in the famous market were seen flouting social distancing norms and many were also seen without masks.

As a result, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to temporarily shift the Dadar wholesale vegetable and flower market soon to an alternative location.

This decision from the BMC was taken yesterday, March 17, during a meeting between the Mayor of Mumbai Kishori Pednekar and other officials from the G North ward office of BMC.

According to BMC officials, the civic administration is looking at two options where the market could be shifted temporarily. The large open MMRDA ground at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Somaiya Playground at Sion are the two feasible options the BMC is looking at. However, a final call will be taken after the Mayor is scheduled to meet members from the market association.

Nearly 400-500 hawkers have their stalls at the Dadar flower market, where thousands of Mumbaikars flock regularly. Located just below the Dadar flyover, the market area becomes heavily congested during the day, making it very difficult for authorities to impose social distancing norms.

In spite of increasing the number of marshals at the Dadar market, both vendors and customers were flouting norms, said officials. Since February, the G north ward under which Dadar falls has recorded a spike in cases. On Wednesday, there were 62 cases reported here, taking the present active case tally to over 600.
