The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to restore the iconic Gateway of India in addition to the civic body’s previous proposal to clear visual obstructions from its surroundings.

A fresh presentation of the plan with details regarding the restoration has been made to Maharashtra Tourism Minister, Aaditya Thackeray.  The BMC is looking to ensure that the Gateway of India is visible from a significant distance by clearing out its surroundings.

One of the proposals previously pitched by a consultant included relocating vendors and shops to an underground basement. However, the BMC scrapped this proposal citing flooding risks as well as security concerns.

Separately, officials had proposed the replacing of heavy barricading at the entrance with something that could enhance the beauty of the monument. The plan also includes revamping the visitors and security blocks with landscaping and appropriate illumination.

The agency’s presentation demonstrated that the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue will be visible from a distance after the new changes.

A consultant is currently working on the plan for the civic body and has made multiple proposals on revamping the area. Despite the civic body’s hesitance to have an underground establishment, the agency has said that this idea may be considered in the future.

An anonymous civic official at the meeting was cited by mid-day as saying, “The plan will include restoration of the Gateway of India which will be done under the state Archaeology department and also improve the vista of the monument, and the main aim is to make it tourist-friendly and attract more visitors.”
