The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started the recruitment of specialist doctors for its HBT polyclinics through outsourcing. Under this method, doctors will be paid a minimum of Rs 1,500 to a maximum of Rs 4,000 for one visit per week. The BMC has issued an advertisement to invite applications from specialists.
HBT Polyclinics was started with the Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Apla Dawakhana initiative.
Patients who come to ‘Aapla Dawakhana’ are referred to the doctors in the respective polyclinics after examination. Currently, there are 26 such polyclinics in mumbai, but there are vacancies for many posts of specialist doctors. Executive Health Officer Dr. Daksh Shah informed that applications from doctors are being invited on contract basis to fill these vacancies.
ENT specialists, general physicians, pediatricians, dermatologists, orthopedics, ophthalmologists, gynecologists and other specialists have been invited.
Applicants must have a degree along with a postgraduate degree. Registration with the Maharashtra Medical Council, other additional qualifications and their renewal are also mandatory. Basic computer knowledge is also required.
The initial appointment will be for 179 days and the contract period will be extended if the performance is satisfactory. Each specialist doctor will serve one day a week.
A fee of Rs 1,500 will be paid for each visit if at least five patients are examined. After five patients, a fee of Rs 250 will be paid for each additional patient. Thus, a doctor can get a maximum of Rs 4,000 for a visit and a minimum of Rs 16,000 per month.
Former corporator Ruksana Siddiqui expressed concern about the transparency in the process. She noted that many specialist doctors from government medical colleges also do private practice while attending hospitals.
She also pointed out that there is no monitoring system to check whether specialist doctors are actually serving patients in polyclinics.
