In order to give impetus to tourism in areas like Tansa, Modak Sagar and Vihar lakes, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have now opened up their guest houses for other people. Initially, these guest houses only accommodated state officials and guests of governments, but now are planning to open this up for everyone.

The seven lakes that supply water to the city are Tulsi, Vihar, Bhatsa, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Upper Vaitarna and Modak Sagar. BMC officials stated that the proposal has been discussed with BMC chief Praveen Pardeshi but other details like tariff and opening dates are yet to be worked on. Notably, these guest houses won't only boost tourism, but also will help in reviving the local economy of these areas.

Earlier this year, the state had taken a similar decision to open up guest houses at several dams, under the water resources department, to tourists. These included 146 rest houses, inspection bungalows, inspection huts and colonies at irrigation project sites. They will now be developed on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis.
