The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to build a mini-pumping station with an underground holding tank at Mankhurd. Traffic jams occur due to water logging during monsoon. Hence, an underground tank will be installed here. A similar underground tank was also built at Hindmata Junction.

New station near Mankhurd subway

A new pumping station will be built near the cross-subway at Mankhurd. It will have three high-capacity pumps, each capable of releasing 3,000 cubic metres of water per hour. The station will have an underground tank with a storage capacity of approximately 1 to 2 lakh litres.

This is expected to provide relief to Maharashtra Nagar and T Junction areas, which are frequently affected by water logging during monsoon. This will smoothen traffic on the Sion-Panvel highway. The project is expected to cost around Rs 15 crore and is expected to be completed in six months.

"During heavy rains, by channeling rainwater into drains or holding tanks, the pumps will reduce flooding and help ease traffic congestion in Mankhurd," an official said.

Inspired by the Hindmata model

The first pumping station was built at Hindmata Junction in 2021, along with a holding tank under the grounds of St. Xavier's College. The capacity of both the tanks is 10.5 crore litres and 18.1 crore litres respectively. This infrastructure has reduced waterlogging in Gandhi Market and Hindmata areas.
