In view of the shocking tragedy which killed 10 babies in a fire that broke out at Maharashtra’s Bhandara district, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday, January 10, stated that orders had been given for conducting a safety and fire audit of all government hospitals across the State.

According to sources, at least 10 children died in a fire that broke out at the Special Neonatal Care Unit (SNCU) of the District General Hospital in Bhandara whereas seven children were rescued. In view of the situation, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is to conduct a campaign in order to inspect the fire protection systems in all the small and big private hospitals in the city.

Moreover, this drive is to start from Monday, January 11. As per reports, Mumbai Municipal Corporation's Nair, KEM, Sion Hospitals regularly carry out fire safety inspections. The report regarding the same is submitted from time to time. However, once again, the fire safety inspection in municipal hospitals will be reviewed.

In case of any defect in the fire protection system in the private hospitals, immediate notification will be issued to the management. In addition, the management will be given a few days to rectify the error in the system. If the error is not rectified within the time limit, legal action will be taken against the concerned hospital.

On the other hand, former Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis, has demanded that a case of culpable homicide be lodged against the hospital authorities.
