For the first time in Maharashtra, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is thinking to grant paternity leave to its male staff. Likewise, on Friday at the general body meeting, Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar approved the proposal of granting two weeks of paternity leave to the BMC employees.

"There are many nuclear families in Mumbai, who do not have help at home or in neighbourhood to care for the pregnant woman in their family. In most cases, both, man and wife, are employed. During this crucial time, the woman needs her husband by her side to help with domestic chores, among other things,” said the report.

According to the Maternity Leave Benefits Act, 26 weeks of maternity leave must be provided to women employees in private, municipal and government establishments. Shiv Sena corporator Samadhan Sarvankar demanded the proposal to be put up at the general body meeting on Friday. After a thorough discussion, the proposal was approved by a majority.

In order to implement the decision, the BMC Commissioner will assess the number of male employees and the impact on the workload with the grant of this leave.
