Mumbai crossed the 5-lakh mark for testing samples of coronavirus on Wednesday, July 29, which recorded the single-day highest of 11,643 tests conducted in a day. The total number of tests conducted so far is 5.05 lakh.

According to sources, the BMC, in order to expand the scope of testing, is said to begin the second phase of the sero surveillance survey from August 10. As per reports, the survey will be carried out in R-North, M-West and F-North wards, to help the civic body understand the spread of the disease in these areas.

The BMC had earlier released the results of the first phase of the sero surveillance test which was conducted in the city. After studying 6,936 samples from three wards namely R-North, M-West, and F-North, the civic body realized that 57 per cent of people dwelling in the slums had in the past been exposed or infected by the coronavirus.

The serological surveillance conducted by the BMC was in accordance with the NITI Aayog, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), as well as institutions based in BMC’s R-North (Dahisar), F-North, and M-West wards. The serosurvey further involves the testing of plasma serum of individuals to check if the body has produced any antibodies to fight off a contagious disease.

The civic body is also touted to conduct another survey that will provide information about the spread of the coronavirus which would explain a lot about the herd immunity. Herd immunity refers to the resistance to the spread of a contagious disease within a population that results if a sufficiently high proportion of individuals are immune to the disease.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra, on Wednesday, July 29, recorded 9,211 fresh cases of the coronavirus which were reported in the last 24 hours and took the tally further to 4,00,65, according to the state health department.
