In the backdrop of spate of major fire incidents in high-rises, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has warned of strict action against building owners and occupants if they fail to comply with the provisions of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Saving Measures Act, 2006.

Moreover, the civic body has appealed citizens to not use flammable material for interior decoration in buildings and to not alter fire protection systems and electrical structures.

It further said interior architects and architects need to pay special attention to these matters.

The owners/occupants concerned of all buildings in the city must ensure that the fire extinguishing system and equipment, as well as the fire alarm equipment, are properly functioning, especially in high-rises.

The BMC administration urged them to prevent fire-related accidents and said that it is the responsibility of the owner/occupier to enforce the provisions of fire prevention and life-saving measures in buildings.

According to the sub-section (3) of section 3 of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Saving Measures Act, 2006, fire extinguishing systems have to be in efficient condition. In addition, it also mentioned that it is mandatory to get a fire audit done in January and July.
