With the relaxations in the strict lockdown guidelines, the number of fresh cases of the coronavirus in D-ward has increased to around 60 a day over the past week, most of them being in high-rises.

The D-ward includes areas such as Breach Candy, Nepean Sea Road, Cumballa and Malabar Hills, Gamdevi and Grant Road. In the period between August 7 and August 12, the ward reported 60 new cases every day which is an increase from 40 fresh cases reported every day earlier.

The BMC, in a bid to contain the spread of the coronavirus, is now sealing entire buildings in these areas where a high number of COVID-19 cases are being found. Moreover, the civic body has reported that entire families have been testing positive for the disease in recent times in the D-ward.

Earlier in July, it was reported that in less than a month, the high-end Malabar Hill and its neighbouring localities in South Mumbai, have had the highest number of sealed buildings across Mumbai’s island city areas.

The civic body elucidating on the reasons for the surge in the number of COVID-19 cases stated that opening up of high-rises for domestic help and drivers, many of whom have traversed back from their villages along with an increasing travelling by the residents in view of the lockdown relaxations within the city are the main reasons for the spike in numbers.
