The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ordered a Breach Candy resident to pay INR 2.65 lakh for damaging the mumbai Coastal Road railing. The civic body said the motorist drove negligently, causing the crash that led to the damage.

The incident took place on October 7 when the car, travelling from Haji Ali to Worli, broke through the barrier and plunged into the sea. According to officials, the Maharashtra Security Forces (MSF) rescued the driver soon after the crash. Traffic police later charged him with drunk driving.

The BMC issued a notice to the motorist on October 30, demanding payment for the damage. The letter stated that the public property was harmed because of careless driving and that the estimated repair cost was INR 2.65 lakh. The driver was instructed to deposit the amount in the BMC treasury and submit the payment receipt to close the case.

As per sources, the delay in issuing the notice was due to an internal assessment of the damage. Since the coastal road is a high-speed corridor, the damaged railing was repaired immediately to prevent risk to motorists. The actual cost was calculated only after the work was completed and bills were cleared.

Officials added that if the motorist fails to pay within a month, a reminder will be sent. If he still does not make the payment, the matter will be sent to the assessment department, and the amount will be added to his property tax bill.

Sources also suggest that BMC has only sought reimbursement for repair costs and not for additional work such as repainting. The Mumbai Coastal Road only became operational round-the-clock on August 15 this year. Following several incidents of speeding and accidents, the chief minister and other officials have urged motorists to drive safely on the route.
