Mumbai: 1,305 buildings sealed amidst spike in COVID-19 cases

The civic body of Mumbai has informed that a total of 1,305 buildings have been sealed across the city amidst the spike in COVID-19 cases.

Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has informed that a total of 1,305 buildings have been sealed in Mumbai after 2,749 COVID-19 cases were reported.

Moreover, 71,838 households reside in these sealed buildings. Meanwhile, on Friday, February 19, Maharashtra recorded 6,112 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 20,87,632. Currently, there are 44,765 active cases in the state. With 2,159 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered soared to 19,89,963.

On the other hand, Mumbai reported 823 new COVID-19 cases, 440 recoveries and five deaths on Friday, February 19, taking the total number of cases in the financial capital to 3,17,310. According to the data shared by the civic body, there are 6,577 active cases whereas 2,98,435 patients have completely recovered so far.

The state of Maharashtra had reported its first case in March 2020, which was followed by stringent shutdowns and curbs that were being lifted in a staggered manner only over the past few months. Moreover, the local train services for all resumed only this month. On Thursday, the civic body decided it will file first information reports (FIR) against home quarantine violators and then send them to mandatory institutional quarantine, under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897.

According to reports, one such FIR was filed against a resident of Chandivli by the BMC with the Powai police, under sections 188 and 269 of the IPC. A building in Mahim was sealed after five patients were detected positive there.
