Centre approves INR 700 crore aid for farmers affected with the floods in Maharashtra

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar made a statement regarding the situation in Maharashtra and said the Central Government received an in-depth report on the damage in Maharashtra, especially with regard to farmers.

The Union government has sanctioned INR 700 crore for flood-hit farmers in Maharashtra, and information regarding this was shared by Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar at the Lok Sabha. 

The amount was sanctioned from the National Disaster Response Fund for the floods which hit the state. Last year, the state was hit hard by torrential rains which affected several areas in the Marathwada region, especially in Osmanabad and Parbhani. The monsoon had caused severe damage to agriculture, basis which the decision regarding the fund allocation was taken by the government, said the officials while answering the question of compensation at the Lok Sabha.

The Maharashtra state government had also submitted a memorandum to NDRF for financial assistance. Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar made a statement regarding the situation in Maharashtra and said the heavy rainfall led to severe flooding in Maharashtra, due to which heavy financial losses have been incurred. Farms and houses have been destroyed, and hundreds lost lives  and thousands were evacuated considering the crisis.

He added that the Central Government received an in-depth report on the damage in Maharashtra, especially with regard to farmers, and understanding the same, the Union Home Ministry has announced assistance of INR 700 crore to the state. Over one lakh farmers have been covered under the state's agricultural insurance scheme. Minister Tomar has also assured that additional compensation will be given to farmers from the state's Disaster Management Assistance Fund.

Farmers have been protesting against the three agricultural laws of the central government for the last few months, and answering these matters, he hinted that the central government has been supporting the farmers.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other officials from the government met on Tuesday, Jly 27, 2021, to discuss the matters related to flooding in Maharashtra. Minister Pawar has instructed the concerned department to take necessary action and help the victims affected by the same. He assured the citizens that the government will offer assistance. He also called for an investigation to understand the damages caused to the farms, trade and familial belongings, basis which further decisions will be taken. 

Furthermore, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has directed the concerned departments to take action on a war footing to provide sanitation and health facilities to prevent the spread of diseases in the flood-hit areas. Instructions have been given to repair electricity, water supply and roads in flood affected areas immediately.
