A week after the fall of the CSMT bridge, the Central Railway (CR) had decided to work on five foot over bridges (FOBs) at stations in Bhandup, Kurla, Vikhroli, Diva, and Kalyan in the upcoming week. The Central Railway had issued tenders a month ago and the dismantling work will begin next week and will be concluded by the end of April.
Last year, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal announced that structural audits of all road overbridges (ROBs) and FOBs in Mumbai will be conducted by experts from IIT. An official from the Central Railway said that the team from IIT-Bombay has inspected 17 of the 19 other structures out of 89 ROBs and 178 FOBs.
The remaining 23 structures are yet to be inspected. A total of 178 FOB audit was conducted, out of which 146 were completely safe, two were found unsafe, for which the CR shut down those FOBs and is currently going to dismantle them.
The IIT-B team also suggested that 30 FOBs need maintenance work, out of which five will be destroyed. There is already a plan to build a new FOB in Kurla replacing the old one and tenders have been invited for the construction. The construction on new FOB will start immediately after the demolition.
