In a major sigh of relief for Mumbaikars, the Central Railway (CR) has withdrawn the proposed hike in the prices of food items at stations.
The new menu and revised rates will come into full effect at the stations starting June 1. However, now the previous rates will remain the same till further notice.
According to the proposal, the price of vada pav were supposed to increase from Rs 13 to Rs 20, while samosas price was surged from Rs 12 to Rs 20.
Other food items that were expected to see a hike in prices included ragda pav, bhel and pav-based snacks.
As per the proposed revised menu:
- Vada Pav: Rs 13 to 20
- Samosa: Rs 12 to 20
- Ragda Pav: Rs 20 to 25
- Paav: Rs 3 to 5
- Ragda/Usal with one paav: Rs 20 to 25
- Sukhi Bhel: Rs 20 to 25
- Chutney Bhel: Rs 25 to 30
Officials clarified that there will be no increase in the prices of juice or soda-based products.
The decision has been withdrawn in the wake of concerns over rising inflation and rising travel costs for common passengers in and around Mumbai.
Meanwhile, railway officials had earlier said that the revision is being implemented on the lines of Western Railway (WR). WR had revised the prices of food stalls in 2025 after the revision made in 2021.
The revised menu was also expected to include new food items like dosas, noodles, soups, slush drinks and cream-filled doughnuts at station stalls. However, the move was criticised by catering associations and passenger groups.
The association had also warned that the increased prices of food items at railway stations could disproportionately affect low-income passengers.
