Maharashtra: State to start Urban Child Development Center Scheme to address malnutrition cases

To address malnutrition in the urban areas of the state, the State Cabinet meeting today gave its approval to start the Urban Child Development Center Scheme for severely malnourished children in urban areas on the lines of the Rural Child Development Center Scheme. The meeting was presided over by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.


Gram Bal Vikas Kendra Scheme is being implemented at Anganwadi level to address malnutrition of severely malnourished (SAM) children in rural areas of the state. The rate of urbanisation in the state is continuously increasing. Since more than half the population lives in urban areas, the number of severely malnourished children in Anganwadis in urbanisation areas is also increasing and an Urban Child Development Center will be started on the lines of Village Child Development Center.

With this decision, the scheme will be implemented in 104 urban projects of the state under the Integrated Child Development Services Scheme. An annual expenditure of approximately INR 11.52 crore has been approved for this scheme and the expenditure has been approved according to the number of severely malnourished children every year.
