The growing number of potholes has now become a major concern for Kalyan residents this monsoon. These deadly potholes have claimed the lives of five people this month since the onset of monsoon. The roads in Kalyan have remained accident-prone for years and pose a great danger to the people living here.

The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has alleged that the citizens have contributed to the poor conditions of the roads. Taking an aggressive stand against the negligence of the municipal corporation, an aware citizens’ organisation has decided not to pay any tax to the corporation. According to the data available, a total of ₹90 crore tax has not been paid by the residents of Kalyan last year.

The founder president of the organisation, Srinivas Ghanekar threatened the corporation of not paying taxes in the future if the citizens do not get rightful facilities.

Despite the grave problem of potholes and pavement blocks in the city, the KDMC has not yet swung into action for taking the corrective measures and safeguard the people using dangerous roads every day. The citizens’ organisation has accused the corporation of not providing adequate facilities and cleanliness against the tax it levies on the common man. Several residents have come together through the organisation since the last year and have warned the civic body of not paying the taxes further, too. Hence, ₹90 crore tax is due in Kalyan.

There has been a huge discontent among the residents who took to the streets to protest against the corporation’s negligence over the poor conditions of roads in the city. The organisation has resolved to take the agitation further by spreading the word of non-payment of taxes among the citizens.

We won’t pay the taxes even if the corporation comes knocking at our doors for taxes or drags us to the court. The KDMC can enjoy disappointment over increasing tax dues even this year as long as the facilities provided by the corporation are satisfactory," Srinivas Ghanekar.
