Maharashtra government and BMC to take stern action against water mafias

As this area is situated 25 metres above the reservoir, the water tank and pumping station have been established in the lower part of the water from where it is supplied. As there are fluctuations in the pressure of the water supply, the mafias fill the water from the reservoirs and sell it at a higher price.

On Thursday, BJP leader Pravin Darekar raised the issue of water mafia in the Legislative Assembly. In response, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured that the government will take stern action against the water mafia.

Currently, the monsoon session of the assembly is going on in Nagpur. During the session, Darekar raised the issue of Kranti Nagar, Kandivali and said that the Kranti Nagar and areas near it are situated at a geographically high position due to which the water supplied to them comes from a reservoir in Malad.

However, the water supply pressure fluctuates which results in inconvenience to people. So, the water mafias send water tankers to the reservoir and fill the water from there to sell it at a higher price due to which common people are forced to pay money.

After hearing this, CM Fadnavis has ordered discontinuation of this practice and has issued orders to take action against the water mafia.

In order to supply water to Kranti Nagar area, a big 1500 mm pipe has been installed in Malad reservoir and smaller 150mm diameter pipes also have been installed in it, for the purpose of water supply. BMC and police officials have already been ordered to take action against water mafias. Also, BMC has informed that 115 illegal connections have been cut in regard to water trafficking.
