Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde warned the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials of facing strict action if the city witnesses waterlogging issues this monsoon season.

He made this statement on Thursday, May 18, after inspecting various pre-monsoon works that are carried out by the civic body.

CM Eknath Shinde, accompanied by senior BMC officials, inspected the drain-cleaning works along the Mithi in Bandra east, the Vakola river in BKC, the holding pond at the Dadar flower market area and Lovegrove pumping station area.

He said the inspection was not done with an eye on polls but to check whether BMC's pre-monsoon preparations were on track.

Shinde asked the BMC administration to ensure a foolproof system is in place at spots that face waterlogging so that people get relief.

Responding to this, civic body chief Iqbal Chahal asserted that Mumbai will not flood even if it is lashed by 300mm rain in a day, but only in a cloudburst-like situation.

He said civic authorities have already set up holding ponds and floodgates to release rain water into the sea.

“I have instructed officials to dig deep till the hard base to clean city nullahs instead of concentrating on how much silt in metric tonnes has been removed. Broken footpaths must be repaired and roads must be cleaned,” he added.

“If good work is done, we don't mind felicitating them, but if the drain-cleaning work is not up to mark, we will take action accordingly.”

The chief minister rejected allegations of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) that contractors had been given advance mobilisation amount of INR 600 crore by the BMC for road tenders.
