When one thinks of Colaba, the first thing that comes to the mind after Gateway of India, is shopping! It has been a great spot for both locals and tourists to shop. However, for the first time in the history of Colaba Causeway, 213 vendors out of 400 have been asked to leave as they do not have the required license to operate. As a result, there are currently only 187 vendors at Causeway.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and Urban Design Research Institute (UDRI) have collaborated together to revamp Mumbai's iconic Colaba Causeway. There will be uniform design for all the stalls at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road. These stalls have been created in such a manner that they don't occupy the entire footpath so that the pedestrians can walk leisurely without worrying about the traffic.

This is a pilot project and will be rolled out permanently if it is sucessful. There are many schools near Colaba Causeway like Fort Convent, Holy Name, Campion, St. Anne's, Scholars etc. According to the rule, there cannot be any hawkers within 100m of a school. Due to the illegal stalls, it was very inconvenient for students and locals to walk on the footpath.

The District Planning Development Committee (DPDC) has been allotted funds of ₹15 crores to revamp hawking stalls across Mumbai and the authorities have utilised these funds for Colaba Causeway and Khar's Linking Road.
