In a circular issued on Sunday, May 17, 2020, the  Maharashtra Societies Welfare Association stated that it is now mandatory for Cooperative Housing Societies (CHS) in Zone 5 of Mumbai to screen its residents for coronavirus (COVID-19).

The circular asked all the societies to conduct screening and maintain a record book of their body temperature & oxygen levels. Officials emphasised that this had to be done for every member staying in the flats and it was the responsibility of the respective CHS. The circular also clarified that the register maintained with the data will be checked by BMC officials in a timely manner. A set of guidelines were mentioned along with the circular and were issued by Maharashtra Cabinet Minister.

In order to conduct the same, societies in Zone 5 have to purchase a thermal gun or an Oxymeter at personal expenses. This needs to be used to check as per the guidelines, and any residents found with low oxygen levels must be admitted at a nearby hospital for further check.

A similar process of 'mass screening' will be performed in slums, chawls and related localities where officials will perform the check based on the SOPs given and common toilets and areas will be sanitised. COVID-19 centres with required number of beds and the necessary treatment facilities are available int he city, in some wards and areas like Kurla, Govandi, Chembur and others.

In case any member from the Muslim community does not wish to be quarantined in the hospital or centres, they can choose to remain quarantined at selected mosques and madrasa, and their food and other requirements will have to be taken care by the members of the respective quarantine centres.

Police officials have been asked to keep a close-eye at containment zones, and members/residents have been asked to stay home and not leave, unless necessary. In case of any help, officials can seek support from local corporator and other members of the government.
