Anticipating a rise in the number of cases in the near future in Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday had directed civic officials to double the present number of beds in private hospitals for COVID-19 patients. In a video conference with Chief Secretary of State Ajoy Mehta and Public Health Secretary Pradeep Vyas, Thackeray was talking about the number of beds in Mumbai, which is the worst-affected city in the country due to the pandemic.

The CM stated that due to the insufficient number of beds required for the treatment of coronavirus patients in both public and private hospitals, it has been observed that the positive patients and the COVID-19 suspects are neglecting to go to the hospital. Therefore, he said that the number of beds should be increased to facilitate the increase in the number of cases in the coming days.

Following the rise in the number of health workers in private hospitals contracting the disease, there have been several complaints of medical staff in private hospitals refusing to attend to COVID-19 patients.

Currently, of the 3,600 beds available in BMC hospitals, 80 per cent of these are being used for COVID-19 patients. On the contrary, only 1,100 beds in private hospitals are being used for COVID-19 patients. Looking at this, the BMC is planning to add 2,100 beds to its hospitals whereas 1,200 beds will be brought in private hospitals for COVID-19 related purposes.

As per the data, 4,800 beds are being used by private as well as civic hospitals for COVID-19 patients. But since the city is a hotspot for COVID-19, the civic body wants to be prepared and is trying to take the total number of beds in civic and private hospitals up to 5,700 and 2,300 beds respectively.
