Amid the economic crisis due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Maharashtra government has announced a lot of cuts on its expenditure while stating that no fresh recruitments will be done in any department other than the health for the financial year 2020-21.

The order issued by the state government stated that no officer of any department will be transferred in the upcoming financial year. The expenses of several departments of the state will be cut except the health department amid the coronavirus outbreak, the circular said.

Furthermore, all departments except health will be prohibited to indulge in the purchase or repair of non-essential commodities. With this, no new schemes will be started in the state.

The order said that it was important for the state departments to spend on the essential schemes and should refrain from spending on other things which can be left for the future.

As of May 3, Maharashtra has reported nearly 12,974 COVID-19 cases while the death toll of the state has risen to 548. Of these cases, almost 8800 cases have been reported from Mumbai alone.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government on Sunday allowed the liquor shops to open, even in red zones which led to people queuing up outside liquor stores in huge numbers. This comes after India has entered the Lockdown 3.0 announced by the centre in the wake of increasing cases of the COVID-19.

Liquor brings the major part of the revenue for Maharashtra. An official from the state excise department said that the liquor sale earned ₹45,000 crores in the form of taxes on it in 2019-20.
