All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) MP from Aurangabad, Imtiaz Jaleel on Monday slammed the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government for its decision to open liquor shops while stating that the decision was not correct and warned that his party will forcefully shut down the liquor shops in Aurangabad.

“Government decides to open liquor shops even in the red zone! If shops in Aurangabad open we'll break lockdown restrictions and forcibly close these shops. Will make many women come out on the streets. This isn't time to sell liquor and create problems for mothers and sisters,” ANI quoted Imtiaz Jaleel as saying.

The AIMIM MLA further asked what was the hurry to sell liquor amid the coronavirus outbreak. Why this privilege only to the liquor shops, why not allow selling everything, he added.

The Maharashtra government on Sunday allowed the liquor shops to open, even in red zones. This has led to people queuing up outside liquor stores in huge numbers. This comes after India has entered the Lockdown 3.0 announced by the centre in the wake of increasing cases of the COVID-19.

The state government allowed all standalone shops, including liquor shops to open in red zones from today. However, the same decision is not applicable to the containment zones.

"Problem is more with women from the lower class who will have to suffer. like my maid who gets beaten up by her husband every day after he comes home drunk. BTW what is hurry to sell liquor in this difficult time? Then why not start everything why this privilege only to liquor shops, (sic)" the twitter handle of Imtiaz Jaleel tweeted him as saying.

Earlier in the day, the authorities in five districts of Maharashtra including Aurangabad, Solapur, Jalna, Buldhana and Amravati decided not to allow liquor sales amid the lockdown. As of May 3, Maharashtra has reported nearly 12,974 COVID-19 cases while the death toll of the state has risen to 548. Of these cases, almost 8800 cases have been reported from Mumbai alone.
