On Friday, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) announced that all migrant labourers will be allowed to travel in its buses while they are dropping them at railway stations for their journey back to their home states. According to a BEST spokesperson, the decision was taken as per the directives of the Supreme Court.

On Thursday, the apex court had directed that no fare for travel must be charged either by buses or trains from stranded migrant labourers and they should be provided food and water. Prior to the Supreme Court's order, the BEST was charging regular fare from the stranded migrants as per distance before they were dropped at railway stations.

The BEST has been relentlessly providing its bus services for employees engaged in essential services during the lockdown. While the local train service started around a week ago and began ferrying the frontline workers, for almost two months BEST has been the only means of transport ferrying these employees.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Police has also come forward to arrange special buses for ferrying the registered migrants to the railway stations. From railway stations, the migrant labourers can go back to their home state in Shramik special trains arranged by the Railway Ministry.
