Coronavirus Outbreak: Over one Lakh Masks Dumped In Bhiwandi

Earlier, there was a video that had gone viral wherein it was shown that used masks were cleaned and then kept for drying. The authorities are suspecting that these were the same masks.

As per a report submitted by the health department officials, over one lakh masks were been found dumped in Bhiwandi near a water pipeline, when a team comprising members from various agencies including the state health department, Food and Drugs Administration, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and Bhiwandi police visited the location to investigate.

Earlier, a video went viral where it was shown that used masks were cleaned and then kept for drying. The authorities are suspecting these to be the same masks. However, when the local police started investigating they did not find anything related to the video.

DCP of Bhiwandi, Rajkumar Singh stated that as the demand for masks is increasing, the outdated face masks kept in the godown for a long time were being cleaned and repackaged for fresh use. Irrespective of its source, the officials said that their main aim is to now dispose the masks as per bio-medical waste guidelines. Authorities are being extremely careful with such incidents as the number of coronavirus cases in the state has increased to five.

As a precautionary measure, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) hospitals are ready to handle situations, in case of emergency. More than a 100 beds have been arranged and kept in isolation wards at Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, KB Bhabha Hospital in Bandra, KB Bhabha Municipal Hospital in Kurla and Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care in Jogeshwari.

Additionally, 24 health teams consisting of six members are deployed at every ward to monitor patients who may show symptoms of Coronavirus. Two teams will be deployed at the international airport to monitor the situation around the clock.
