The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has increased the number of containment zones to 721 in just 20 days. The number of cases for coronavirus or COVID-19 in Maharashtra have risen up to 4,200 while the death toll has climbed to 223.

Of the 4,200 COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, nearly 2,724 cases are from Mumbai. On Sunday, 552 fresh coronavirus cases were reported and 456 of these cases were from Mumbai alone. The slum dominated-area in Mumbai, Dharavi has also reported 138 cases so far.

The BMC had marked 77 containment zones before March 30 which has increased to 721. The civic body marked 575 places as containment zones on Saturday and the number was 452 before Saturday, the Times of India reported.

The civic body in Mumbai has categorised the containment zones into blue, orange and red. The first category, blue, is for the buildings which are formal housing and the second category is for congested areas which are manageable while the third category is for congested pockets which are placed under tight lockdown.

“We felt that the categorisation within the 721 zones was essential so that the civic body staff along with police officers who are ensuring that there is restricted movement in containment zones are aware of the steps they need to take and whether any additional staff needs to be kept at the site in case of it being marked as a red zone,” an official was quoted in TOI report as saying.

Bandra corporator Asif Zakeria said that in his ward most people were adhering to the rules made for the containment zones. The civic authorities are putting up banners outside the buildings which have been marked as a containment zone and people residing in that buildings need to be home quarantined.

“Residents mostly do adhere to the rules of not moving out and police also kept patrolling the area in the day,” Zakeria informed.

The BMC officials stated that the challenge was congested localities, especially slum areas where high-risk contacts are institutionally quarantined but within the same zone.
