After the Union Home Ministry allowed the movement of stranded people, the Maharashtra government is set to transport nearly 11 lakh migrant workers and labourers to their homes outside or inside the state.

According to a report published in Mumbai Mirror, nearly 7 lakh of these people are from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The state government officials are coordinating with the railways regarding trains needed to transport the migrants while the nodal authorities in each district are making details of persons to be moved, it said.

The sources have informed that those travelling out of state will leave first followed by people travelling within the state. The inter-state transfer will be done via trains only while buses will be used to transport people within the state.

Keeping in mind the social distancing norms, no trains for the will be allowed to carry more than 1,000 passengers and only 25 passengers will be allowed in each bus.

“If 5 lakh migrants line up to leave Mumbai for other states and another 2 lakh want to travel within the state, we will need 500 trains and 8,000 buses,” the report published in Mumbai Mirror read.

Moreover, to transport the stranded migrants and others, the police stations are putting in place a mechanism to issue travel pass and the health department in Maharashtra is preparing to screen every migrant on his way out.

In a huge relief to the stranded migrants due to the coronavirus lockdown, the Union Home Ministry earlier allowed the movement of migrant workers, labourers and others who are stuck in cities, wanting to go home.

“All persons to be medically screened at source and destination. They will be kept in home or institutional quarantine on arrival as per the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,” the MHO spokesperson informed.

This order came after 36 days of the nationwide lockdown which has now been extended for two more weeks from May 4. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government is likely to ask the concerned state governments to bear the cost of transporting migrant workers and labourers.
