According to the latest reports, daily infections and the test positivity rate (TPR) increased in Mumbai on Wednesday, June 1 with the city reporting 739 cases. This is reported to be the highest single-day rise in cases in 116 days. On the other hand, the positivity rate was at 8.4 per cent which is the highest since February.

Based on accounts, data furnished by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) the TPR in Mumbai rose from 6 per cent on Tuesday, May 31 to 8.4 per cent on Wednesday. A week ago, the positivity rate was nearly 3 per cent. Likewise, till Wednesday, in the 24 hours, 8,792 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the city.

It has been reported, however, that the number of coronavirus hospitalisations continues to be smaller in contrast to the aggregate hospital beds available. Narratives suggest that as of Wednesday, a mere 0.42 per cent of Mumbai's 24,473 hospital beds marked for COVID-19 patients were occupied.

On the other hand, owing to the rise in cases registered in Mumbai, Maharashtra too witnessed a jump in figures. The state's tally crossed the 1,000 mark with 1,081 cases being reported. Nonetheless, zero COVID-19 deaths were registered. Maharashtra now has a positivity rate of 4.25 per cent.

Amid this rise in cases seen in the city, BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on Wednesday asked the authorities to ramp up testing and vaccination. He also anticipates a rise in symptomatic cases owing to the approaching monsoon season.

Similarly, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Wednesday opined that there isn't any need to worry because even while a significant number of cases are being reported in Mumbai, amongst other cities in the state, the rate of hospitalizations is low.
