Mumbai is seeing a considerable rise in the number of COVID-19 cases. On Tuesday, May 31, the city reported 505 coronavirus cases. In light of this, reports state that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has asked his staff to augment testing and vaccination.

Based on accounts, Chahal in a message to his colleagues elaborated on how with monsoon nearing, there could be possibilities of greater symptomatic coronavirus cases. He was quoted in narratives elaborating on how it is "better to plan for the worst and hope for the best".

It has been reported that Chahal asked his staff to increase the number of tests promptly. He instructed that the testing labs must become proactive and completely staffed. In addition to this, he opined that inoculation for those between the age of 12-18 and booster doses for adults should be ramped up.

Narratives highlight that Chahal instructed the BMC's health department that hospitals be on alert and adequately staffed. Further, he added that in the coming days if hospitalizations increase, the jumbo facility in Malad be utilized on priority. He asked that private hospitals also be put on alert.

The BMC Commissioner reportedly told the assistant commissioner in charge of wards to review the ward war room's status to see to it that they are completely equipped with medical teams, ambulances and staff.

Moreover, additional municipal commissioners have been told to visit the jumbo centres in their jurisdiction to see if they are ready for Mumbai rains with structural stability certification, fire safety mechanism, housekeeping, catering, paramedical and medical staff, dewatering pumps, oxygen manufacturing plants and medicines.
