COVID-19: Hospitalisation Up by 231% in Mumbai

After nearly two months, the intensive care units (ICUs) at public COVID-19 hospitals in Mumbai have started seeing a slight uptick in admissions. In addition, the recent spurt in cases has also prompted private facilities to set aside beds for coronavirus patients.

This development comes at a time when Mumbai reports more than 500 fresh daily cases on Tuesday, May 31. Meanwhile, Maharashtra also saw a massive rise with 711 new COVID-19 cases, which is 65 per cent up from 431 a day ago. States sees one death in last 24 hours. Therefore, it has come to light that the hospitalisations due to the novel virus have increased by 231 per cent in May over April. Till Monday, May 30, the city saw 215 admissions to hospitals, up from 65 in April.

Most hospitalisations are being diverted to Seven Hills Hospital in Marol, which remains the only dedicated COVID Care hospital in the city. ICU admissions in the hospital touched 10 on Sunday, May 29.

However, the admissions are mostly among those above 60 years or with comorbidities. According to the data, eight of the 10 patients are above 60 and have more than two comorbidities. Moreover, 5 are unvaccinated and 1 partially jabbed. The two exceptions are a man (46) and a boy (16) with underlying conditions. A recent admission was a diabetic (75) with kidney ailment, fever and pneumonia. Young people must take precautions as cases may rise in vacation, official stated.

Reports stated that the city started recording admissions in double digits in the past 7 days, after almost 75 days.

Amid rising coronavirus cases over last few days across Maharashtra, the Mumbai guardian minister Aslam Shaikh hinted of restrictions again if daily COVID-19 positive cases exceed thousand in the state.
