Coronavirus Pandemic: Maharashtra crosses the '2,000-mark' with over 7.4 per cent death rate

The number of cases for the coronavirus or COVID-19 has been increasing across the country despite the nationwide lockdown in place. The COVID-19 patients' count has soared up to 9,152 in India with the death toll reaching 308. 

Of the 9,152 cases in India, almost 2,064 have been reported from Maharashtra with the death toll in the state reaching 149. The death rate Maharashtra is close to 8 per cent (7.41 per cent as of April 13, 2020) while the national average is around 3 per cent. Mumbai has become the worst-hit city and has reported over 1,300 cases alone. 

On Monday, a state health official informed that at least 82 people were tested positive for COVID-19 in Maharashtra in 12 hours. Of the 82 fresh cases of COVID-19, 59 were reported from Mumbai while 12 from Malegaon tehsil in Nashik district. 

Along with this, five new cases were reported from Thane, three from Pune, two from Palghar and one from Vasai-Virar area. One of Asia’s biggest slum, Dharavi also reported four new COVID-19 cases taking the toll in the slum-dominated area to 47.

Earlier, it was learnt that the state government is likely to consider distributing hydroxychloroquine sulphate (HCQS) tablets to residents who are at high risk of contracting the deadly virus, especially in places like Dharavi. 

A state government official informed that people who are suspected to have contracted COVID-19 or are at high-risk and are placed under quarantine centres in places like Dharavi will be first to receive the anti-malaria drug as a “preventive medicine”. 

However, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope stated that the drug will not be given to the whole of Dharavi but people will be categorised in groups - from those in high risk, those in government quarantine to those in contact with positive COVID-19 patients.
