Covid-19 vaccine doses administered at private hospitals in the city is double that of those administered in public centres in August, state reports. The reason for this is attributed to the fact that public centres were not operational for six days in August so far, due to the shortage of available doses. Citizens were then naturally pulled towards those at private centres.

According to reports, BMC’s data shows that whilst on one hand, private centres gave 5.7 lakh doses from August 1 to 15, centres run by the state government and the civic authority gave 2.9 lakh doses. Owing to the unavailability of vaccines, public centres were non-operational on August 4, 12 and 13. Apart from this, they were also not functioning on Sunday’s. The call for paid vaccination saw a 41% fall in doses given in July, stated a report by the Times of India.

The report also states that as per Dr Ravi Duggal, a public health researcher, private centres numbers rose because public centres were running out of doses. Additionally, with travel in Mumbai locals restricted to those fully vaccinated, citizens are flocking to get jabbed. The account cites that it costs nearly Rs 1500- Rs 2600 to be fully vaccinated.

On the other hand, private hospitals are now expecting people between the ages of 18-44 since they had taken their first dose in May, making them eligible for their second dose now.

Additionally, a civic official stated that whilst they cannot control the shortage, they are trying to address it with CSR initiatives.
