On Wednesday, January 19, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) told the Bombay High Court that the COVID-19 condition in Mumbai as well as its surrounding areas is under control since the daily count of new coronavirus cases has decreased from nearly 20,000 10 days ago to 7,000 on Tuesday. Adding that there is no need to panic, reports stated.
According to accounts, a senior advocate told the bench that while the number of positive cases were increasing between January 6 to 9, there has been a gradual decrease after that on January 18, the number of positive cases fell to 7,000.
Based on narratives, the high court has been tracking the rise of the novel virus infections in the state during hearings on a petition filed by a lawyer during the second wave of the pandemic, drive by the Delta variant. The lawyer has been reported to have complained about the improper management of the coronavirus treatment in Maharashtra.
The Bombay High Court will take the case on January 27 and has asked the Maharashtra government to file a report on the coronavirus situation in the state till January 25.
The BMC had previously filed a status report on coronavirus and the steps undertaken by the body, in response to the court's January 10 directive. As on January 15, according to the BMC from the 84,352 active cases, 7 per cent were admitted to hospitals, 3 per cent were on oxygen beds, 1 per cent were in ICUs while 0.7 per cent were on ventilators.
The body added that they are undertaking requisite measures to contain the third wave whilst attending to positive patients. The measures undertaken regard vaccination, bed and ambulance management and oxygen supply amongst others.
