COVID-19 Third Wave: "Situation is under control," says Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope

According to reports, Maharashtra on Tuesday, January 18, recorded 39,207 new coronavirus cases, 26 per cent more than the previous day, and 53 fresh fatalities linked to the infection, the state health department said.

In a major relief, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Wednesday, January 19, said that the daily COVID-19 caseload in the state is decreasing and that number of hospitalisations have also reduced.

This development comes days after Maharashtra and Mumbai was at a peak of the third wave in the first week of January. On the other hand, nearly seven districts from Vidharbha and many from Marathwada and north Maharashtra entailing Nandurbar, Bhandara, Wardha, Washim, Yavatmal, Gadchiroli and Hingoli previously had active cases in single digits but in the past two weeks, have registered a 100 to 300-fold increase.

Tope further added that the overall situation in the state is under control.

"The number of daily new COVID-19 cases is decreasing and the overall situation is under control; Hospitalisations are less in number. We are using our full potential to increase testing and vaccination coverage," he was quoted saying by news agency ANI.

According to reports, Maharashtra on Tuesday, January 18, recorded 39,207 new coronavirus cases, 26 per cent more than the previous day, and 53 fresh fatalities linked to the infection, the state health department said.

Moreover, experts have stated that the third wave have just begun and the cases are likely to further increase in the month of February. However, Mumbai has already seen a significant drop in the number of daily COVID-19 cases from more than 20,000 last week to mere 6,000 cases on Tuesday, January 18.

Besides, no fresh case of the highly contagious Omicron variant of coronavirus was reported in the state in the last 24 hours, it added.

Meanwhile, On Monday, January 17, the state had reported 31,111 fresh cases and 24 fatalities.
