On Wednesday, January 12, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray stated that it isn't true that COVID-19 cases are reducing. Several reports have quoted him elaborating on how daily numbers are increasing every day and according to the health department, a spike in cases is anticipated between January-end to early February. Adding that cases in rural areas are rising as well.

Some reports also mention the anticipation of a rise in hospitalization numbers of COVID-19 patients at the end of January or the first week of February, said that state health department.

Apart from this, Rajesh Tope, Health Minister mentioned that there isn't a flattening of the curve either in Mumbai or Maharashtra. Certain accounts have quoted Dr Shashank Joshi, a member of the state's COVID-19 task force elaborating on how Mumbai is at the peak of the third wave currently. Further remarking that daily changes shouldn't matter as much as the weekly numbers, he said, stated accounts.

Joshi remarked that in spite of higher numbers on Wednesday, daily test positivity is lower and that absolute numbers shouldn't be looked at, instead other parameters such as number of hospitalizations, number of people on ventilators, amongst others should be looked at.

Based on reports, BMC Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal claimed that the daily test positivity rate could increase in the coming days owing to the alterations in the national COVID-19 testing guidelines.

Thackeray remarked that districts have been asked to emphasise vaccination, since those fully vaccinated, even if hospitalized, do not need oxygen support and have a faster recovery. According to him, oxygen requirement in Maharashtra has risen to 400MT and if the requirement reached 700MT, stricter curbs will come into force.

Tope, is reported to have said that of the aggregate active cases in Maharashtra, nearly 3 per cent are critical and need oxygen and ICU beds.

Moreover, in the cabinet, weekly COVID-19 indicators were presented which depicted the weekly positivity of Maharashtra as of January 11 to 21.3 per cent, with Thane at the top of the chart with almost 30 per cent, followed by Mumbai at 28.2 per cent. However, officials cited that death in the first 11 days has been 0.03 per cent which is lower than 0.5 per cent in December.
