On Wednesday, January 12, Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope remarked that there may not be any relaxations in the restrictions for at least the middle of the next month, considering the rise in COVID-19 cases, reports stated.

According to reports, Tope elaborated on how experts have claimed that the spread of infection can be curtailed by the imposition of curbs as well as increasing the vaccination speed. Tope added that priority is to curtail the spread of the virus, however, smaller cities have begun reporting a higher number of cases

In the state cabinet meeting on Wednesday, the slow pace of vaccination in the state and recently imposed curbs were discussed, he cited. He further elucidated that cabinet members believe that educational institutions should continue to remain closed. Adding that they are observing the numbers daily and a decision will be undertaken appropriately.

Based on accounts, he mentioned the cabinet's displeasure over the slow vaccination pace in Maharashtra. He mentioned that strict action will be undertaken to see to it that citizens get vaccinated. He believes that it is unfair that people take concessions like ration but do not get vaccinated.

Tope said that while they may not be able to make vaccination compulsory, districts have been told to take strict measures to ensure that everyone is vaccinated in the interest of the larger public.

Tope was also quoted by reports elucidating on how there is a shortage of Covaxin in the state. He added that they were getting calls from district authorities about this. Therefore, in the video conference with Union health minister, the state demanded 50 lakh doses of Covishield and 40 lakh doses of Covaxin.

Previously, reports were doing rounds on how nearly 98 lakh people in Maharashtra are yet to take even the first jab.
