Following the tragic Mumbra incident, the railway authorities have swung in action and introduced various safety measures to manage the footboard crowding and regulate passenger behaviour.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has banned passengers from standing at train doors with bags in Mumbai local trains, especially during peak hours.
Moreover, additional RPF or local police personnel will be deployed at major stations during the evening rush to implement and enforce the new rule.
Soon after the accident, where eight passengers were killed, the railway officials announced that now local trains will have automatic door closure systems, similar to those in Metro trains.
A CR spokesperson said that last year panic buttons had been installed by Railtel Corporation India Limited (RCIL) on the main and harbour lines of CR. A few stations where they have been installed include Byculla, Chinchpokli, Currey Road, Mulund, Dockyard Road and Cotton Green.
The system has been designed to allow passengers, especially women, to quickly alert the RPF in case of emergencies.
Railways has also urged the state government and private sector offices to consider staggered office timings to ease overcrowding during peak hours.
