In a major relief for suburban commuters, Central Railway will upgrade 10 existing 12-coach local train services to 15-coach trains on the CSMT–Karjat corridor from July 20. The move comes after a gap of nearly seven years and is aimed at reducing overcrowding on routes serving Ambarnath, Badlapur and Karjat.
The upgraded services will operate on the Central Railway's Main Line, increasing the carrying capacity of each train by approximately 25 percent. Railway officials said the additional coaches are expected to significantly improve travel conditions for thousands of daily passengers without increasing the total number of services.
The upgrade includes five down services (towards Karjat/Kasara) and five up services (towards CSMT). Some trains will also undergo minor timetable adjustments to accommodate the longer rakes.
According to Central Railway, the expansion has been made possible after infrastructure improvements, including platform extensions on the route. The initiative forms part of the railway's ongoing efforts to enhance suburban rail capacity and improve passenger convenience on one of Mumbai's busiest commuter corridors.
