As the monsoon approaches, the Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (CR) have started taking active measures to make sure of continued services for the residents of Mumbai.

One of the issues addressed was the stations whose roofs are prone to corrosion. Corroded roofs can cause material to fall on EMU rakes. Such stations have been cleaned as part of the pre-monsoon preparations.

Western Railway has also focused on the leakage of water from the top AC units into AC EMU rakes during the rainy seasons. To tackle this, the upper portion has been sealed to prevent the intrusion of rainwater. Similar measures have been taken to prevent rainfall seepage through shuttered windows in non-AC EMU rakes.

To prevent track waterlogging, dewatering pumps have been installed by WR and CR officials. Sources suggest that there is a need for work on the fifth and sixth lines. This includes the widening of current drains, micro tunnelling to facilitate effective water movement from east to west, and the construction of additional drains.

BMC Storm Water Department staff will also inspect and certify all culverts beneath the railway tracks by June 5. The civic body pays WR and CR to clean the drains each year.

To reduce the risk of flooding, tracks have also been raised. There have also been ongoing cleaning operations in Nullah. They are expected to be completed before the onset of the monsoon.
