Amid the imposition of Section 144 CrPC in Mumbai over the weekend on 11 and 12 December, a huge crowd was seen at Girgaum Chowpatty on Sunday, December 12, reported the news agency ANI.

With Section 144 CrPC in force, rallies, morchas, processions etc of either persons or vehicles had been prohibited. It was claimed that those violating the said order will be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, it was seen at Girgaum Chowpatty that the rules were flouted.

News agency PTI quoted an official mentioning that the Section 144 CrPC has been imposed to "prevent the danger to human life from the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 as well as a threat to the law-and-order situation against the backdrop of the violence that took place in Amravati, Malegaon and Nanded".

Maharashtra so far has 18 cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19. On Sunday, another case of Omicron was reported in Nagpur. The 40-year-old infected individual arrived in Nagpur on December 5 from South Africa, stated reports. Moreover, it has been reported that the person had not been vaccinated against coronavirus. Presently, he is under isolation at AIIMS Nagpur with mild symptoms.
