In light of the rising cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Maharashtra, Section 144 CrPC has been imposed in Mumbai on Saturday and Sunday, 11 and 12 December. In light of this, rallies, morchas, processions etc of either persons or vehicles has been prohibited, reported news agency ANI.

The state has a total of 17 Omicron cases so far.
Violators of the order will be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). An official was quoted by the news agency PTI stated that Section 144 CrPC has been imposed to "prevent the danger to human life from the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 as well as threat to the law-and-order situation against the backdrop of the violence that took place in Amravati, Malegaon and Nanded".
In a major development, the state on Friday, December 10, reported seven new cases of the Omicron variant, including a three-year-old, of the Omicron variant. With this, the number of Omicron, new strain of coronavirus, has touched to 17.
According to state health department, of the aggregate cases, three are from Mumbai. Due to this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the tally of Omicron patients in the city increased to five. All of them are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, added the state health department.
The state department in its release stated that the three patients from Mumbai were all male, aged 48, 25 and 37 with recent travel history of Tanzania, the UK and South Africa-Nairobi, respectively.
