Omicron Scare: 7 new cases detected in Maharashtra, 3 from Mumbai

In a major development, Maharashtra on Friday, December 10, has reported seven new cases, including a three-year-old, of the Omicron variant.

With this, the tally of Omicron, new strain of coronavirus, has touched to 17. According to state health department, of the total cases, three are from Mumbai and four are from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Due to this, the BMC today said the tally of Omicron patients in the city increased to five.

All of them are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, added the state health department. It has come to light that four of the new patients were asymptomatic while other three have only mild symptoms, it added.

Meanwhile, four new patients reported from the PCMC in Pune district were contacts of three Nigerian women who were found to have Omicron infection earlier.

Besides, of the seven new patients, four were fully vaccinated. However, from the remaining three patients - one has received a single dose of the vaccine while one has not been vaccinated and there is a three and a half years old patient, who is not eligible for vaccination.

The release said 61,439 international travelers have arrived in the state via Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur airports since December 1. Of these, 9,678 were from 'at-risk' countries. 

Earlier in the day, the traveller who returned from Tanzania, was a resident of the densely-populated Dharavi slum area, tested positive for Omicron. He was asymptomatic and isolated before he mingled in the community. In addition on the same, five out of seven person detected with the new variant earlier tested negative.

On Wednesday, December 8, Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope had brushed off the possibility of any lockdown after the emergence of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, stated reports. Instead, he remarked that the focus should be on the implementation of the “3T” formula. This formula includes testing, tracking, treatment apart from following COVID-appropriate behaviour.

The first case near Mumbai was reported in Kalyan-Dombivali. The 33-year-old Omicron-infected patient from Dombivli, arrived to city on November 22 from Cape Town. He was given discharge from the hospital on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. 

Moreover, a 37-year-old who travelled from South Africa on November 25 and his 36-year-old friend who had come from the USA on the same day, tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Mumbai
