Levels in lakes that supply water to Mumbai, currently stand at 64% that according to reports, will address 220 days’ worth of the city’s needs. Mumbai receives its water from seven lakes that at present hold 936,933 million litres of water. This is higher than what was available last year at the same time at 451,696 million litres. Similarly, the levels were at 837,394 million litres in 2019.

Certain reports state that each day, the BMC gives 3,850 million litres of water to Mumbai. In accordance with them, last year at this time, lakes were 31.21% full, whilst in 2019 were at 57.86%.

The seven water supplying lakes to Mumbai include Bhatsa, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Tulsi, Upper Vaitarna, and Vihar lakes. The total water capacity is 1,447,363 million litres.

This season, on July 16, Tulsi was the first to overflow. On July 18, Vihar overflowed. On Thursday at 3.24 am Modak Sagar overflowed that was followed by Tansa at 5.48 am.

Till Thursday, Upper Vaitarna had 0% useful water content that drastically went up to 37.54%. Presently, Bhatsa has 60.01% useful water supply, Modak Sagar is 100%, whilst Middle Vaitarna is 58.55%, Tansa is at 98.85%, Tulsi and Vihar are at 100%.

For BMC utilization 717,037 million litres, 575,700 million litres is assigned from the total useful content. This season, out of all the lakes, Tulsi has attained maximum total rainfall, trailed by Vihar at 3,034 mm and 2,060 mm respectively. On the other hand, Modak Sagar has received 1,677mm, Tansa has received 1,601mm and Upper Vaitarna has received a total of 1,147mm.
