On Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) dismantled a fish market in Dadar at the Senapati Bapat Marg. Nearly 40 vendors from there were shifted to Navi Mumbai’s Airoli.

Other than that, some are shifted to Marol’s civic market and have been provided with shops wherein they can sell their produce. However, some refrained from doing so and instead insisted that they would sell their product outside the market in Dadar. It is interesting to note that the history of the market dates back to almost 30 years.

Based on the report by The Times Of India, the assistant municipal commissioner (G-North), Kiran Dighavkar stated that a show-cause notice was given to all the sellers. He went to elucidate that of the 37 official fish sellers, 27 have been assigned shops in Airoli whilst 10 were given accommodation at Marol’s market. He also mentioned that the market was demolished only after following due process. He is also of the opinion that this razing will ease traffic not just on Senapati Bapat Marg, but also make room for the flower market in the vicinity.

However, the relocation of these people raises questions regarding the inconvenience they may face since their place of resettlement is miles from where they were before.
