Wadala- The proposed monorail statioon at Dadar east which is coming up near Wadala faces a christening dilemma.
A 400 year old Vitthal temple stands in the adjoining area and the Vitthal Mandir Samiti is nw of the opinion that instead of naming it as Dadar East station, the MMRDA should name it as ‘Vithhal Mandir station’. “We have written a letter to the state government and MMRDA to look into the matter. If they don’t do it, then we will protest,” said Deepak Shinde, treasurer, Vitthal Mandir Samiti.
Bajrang Deshmukh, member, Vitthal Mandir Samiti, said, "If Ram Mandir railway station can come up, then why not Vitthal Mandir station?" Meanwhile, MMRDA spokesperson Dilip Kavhatkar said, “We will think about the residents' demand and will take a call as per our management’s decision.”
In December 2016, the new Oshiwara railway station was christened as Ram Mandir station to honour a medieval temple that stands in the area. A protest for and against the demand to rename it thus raged for some days before the authorities gave in to the demands. Not long after, a proposal to rename the Elphinstone Road station as Prabhadevi, to honour the local deity's temple in the area, was also cleared.
