As the coronavirus cases in Mumbai witnesses a downward trend, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has predicted further drop in the daily COVID-19 infections in the city.

With this, it has come to light that a decision on relaxing existing restrictions on travel and entertainment would be taken after the state COVID-19 task force meeting on Monday, January 31.

The civic body additional commissioner Suresh Kakani on Sunday, January 30, stated that the daily COVID-19 cases to drop below 1,000 within the next few days in Mumbai.

As it is already the third wave of the COVID owing to Omicron, we expect the death toll to drop to single digits within a week’s time, Kakani was quoted as saying by the TOI.

Moreover, until January 15, the death toll in Mumbai was in single digits for almost five months since August 2021. However, despite a drop in cases, the number of death reported has seen a growth in the last few days of January.

The city on Sunday, January 30, recorded 1,160 cases and 10 fatalities. On the same day, BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said the city's positivity rate has come down to 2.5 per cent.

Besides, on Sunday, January 30, Maharashtra reported 22,444 new COVID-19 cases and 50 deaths in the state.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope had mentioned said that it seems the COVID-19 third wave has come down as the count of new daily cases is dropping from the peak of 47,000 to less than 25,000. Although some cities are showing an increase in coronavirus cases, the overall tally has been sliding.
