Officials from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), over the last few weeks, have been contemplating over increasing the wards in the district and as per reports, the decision regarding the same is likely to be announced on Tuesday, February 1, 2022.

It is being said that the draft for the same has been prepared and once approved, the same would be published. It has been proposed that the district should have a total of 122 wards and this has to be increased from the current 111 wards, whereby the concerned department will have to demarcate the existing wards and create the new ones.

The need for additional wards was suggested by the state election commission and once announced, the municipal elections will be based as per the 122 wards. A report regarding the same was published in the Free Press Journal, which mentioned that the decision to increase the wards was taken keeping the growing population in mind which has increased significantly across the district, in the last 10 years. Data from the census reveals an increase in 20% population in comparison to the 2011 figures where the population in NMMC was over 1.1 million. Due to the above mentioned reason, the authorities believe that additional representation is needed to expedite the projects and related works

The municipal elections in Navi Mumbai were postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic, and the civic body expects the same to be held in March or April 2022, and final decisions regarding the same will be taken by NMMC chief Abhijit Bangar, keeping several factors in mind. On the election front, the civic body also conducted a drive in December 2021 to enroll new citizens as voters from Belapur and Airoli constituencies. Though a draft voter list was published early last year, officials noted that the names of several citizens was missing and hence the drive was planned to include the additional names before the elections.
