On Wednesday, June 22, the Maharashtra cabinet undertook the decision to drop all civil and criminal charges against students and youth for not adhering to the prohibitory regulations during the two years of the COVID-19-induced lockdown, reports stated.

Based on accounts, however, charges on those with attacks on frontline workers or damaging public property worth over INR 50,000 will not be able to benefit from this governmental decision.

On the other hand, narratives suggest that relief will be accorded to those facing charges for causing social or political stirs that did not cause any death or damage to public property.

It was back in March that the state government had decided to withdraw all the cases filed against general citizens and students for violation of lockdown orders in the past two years of the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier then, state home minister Dilip Walse Patil had remarked that the cases were majorly filed under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 188. A proposal was to be put before the state cabinet for approval which has now been attained.

According to narratives, now that the cabinet nod has been attained, it can be anticipated that all such cases lodged across Maharashtra will be taken back.
